The History of Dessalines

Dessalines, also known as Marchand Dessalines is named after Jean-Jacques Dessalines, a leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of independent Haiti. Dessalines wife Marie Claire Heureuse is the hospitals namesake

Where it's located

Dessalines is a commune in the Artibonite department of Haiti, located in the Artibonite Valley.  It is approximately 134 km north of Port au Prince.

The Forts

All around Dessalines are steep hills and mountains, at the top of which are historic Forts that defended the city both during and after the slave rebellion.  If you are a hiking enthusiast the climb reveals a beautiful view of the city and countryside, plus a valuable piece of history.
